I have been teaching eight to eleven year olds for over 30 years and I know my audience well.

Readings:
My presentation consists of an introduction to myself and my work, and a reading followed by questions from the audience. I discuss where ideas come from, how my books came about, my own experiences getting published and many aspects of the writing process. I usually finish the session with a short reading as well.

Workshops:
As I do not rigidly plan out my sessions in advance it allows each one [in consultation with the teachers] to be unique to the group I am working with and ensures that the children get as much from the sessions as possible. I discuss how I get ideas and show how I develop these ideas into a story.

The overall aim of my sessions is to be entertaining, informative and stimulating so that children are left feeling enthusiastic and excited about the writing process and their own writing.

Thanks to Mr. O'Brien's Library visit, our class is writing more than
ever before! His 'Hook Book' [writing ideas book] has become this season's must-have and
students are putting into practise many other great writing tips that
Mr. O'Brien suggested!
Bubba Begonia and his classmates have become instant celebrities with
students literally lining up for a chance to read about them!

Mr. O’Brien’s reading/workshop was excellent. The children listened to his every word and were involved with the thought process during his session. Great learning experience for everyone. They were very excited and are still talking about the ideas and how he read his story to them.
